一旦いったん

once

for a short time, briefly, temporarily

一旦 + Verb

The adverb 一旦 is used to describe an action that is done temporarily, briefly, or for the moment. It can also be used to mean once, indicating that once a specific action takes place, a certain condition or consequence follows.

一旦 + Verb (Temporarily / For the moment)

Functions as an adverb to show that an action is done temporarily or paused for the present time, often with the implication that the original state or a different action will resume later.

I will stop the car temporarily.

I will put the luggage down for a moment.

一旦 + Conditional Verb (Once)

Used to mean once, typically followed by a conditional verb form such as ~たら or ~と. It emphasizes that once a threshold is crossed or an action is initiated, a specific result follows.

Once I decide, I do not change it.

Once you go outside, you cannot return.

Note

Because 一旦 is an adverb, it does not conjugate and simply precedes the verb or the object of the verb. When meaning temporarily, it is natural to use it when pausing a task or stepping away briefly. When used to mean once, it usually pairs with conditional verb forms to stress the irreversible or definite nature of what follows.
