Noun が ある

ある is used to express the existence of inanimate objects, such as plants, buildings, abstract concepts, or physical things. It is also used to express possession.

Inanimate Objects

The most basic form to state that a physical object exists.


There is a book.

There is a tree.

Possession and Abstract Concepts

Used to express that someone possesses something or that an abstract concept exists.


I have time.

I have a question.

Note

ある is strictly for inanimate objects. For living things like people or animals, いる must be used instead. When indicating a location, the particle に is used to mark where the object exists.
