Grammar Point

する

to do, to carry out, to perform

Noun + する

The verb する is used to express performing an action, carrying out a task, or playing a sport or game. It is the most common way to turn nouns into verbs.

Action Nouns

Used with nouns that describe an activity, sport, or academic subject to indicate that the subject is performing that action.

I will study.

I play tennis.

Note

When used with nouns that represent an action (like 勉強 or 掃除), the particle を can often be omitted in informal speech, though it is technically present. する can also be used to describe playing sports or games, but not for playing musical instruments.

Accessories + する

する can be used to describe the act of putting on or wearing certain accessories, such as ties, watches, or jewelry.

Wearing Accessories

Used when an individual is wearing or putting on an accessory.

To wear a tie.

To wear a watch.

Note

This usage is specific to items that are 'attached' to the body rather than worn as clothing. For example, you use する for a necktie, but 履く for shoes or 着る for a shirt.

Role + を + する

する is used to describe the role or job a person is currently performing or acting as.

Playing a Role

Used to indicate that someone is fulfilling a specific role or position.

To act as the leader.

To play the role of a parent.

Note

This often implies a temporary role or a specific function being served in a particular context.
