for, for the sake of, to one's advantage, in favor of, in favour of, on behalf of

Noun + の + ため(に)

This formation expresses that an action is performed for the benefit of someone or something, or for a specific purpose.

When used with a noun, it indicates the person or entity receiving the benefit or the goal of the action.

I study for the sake of my family.

This is a book for children.

Note

The particle に is optional and often omitted in casual speech or when the phrase is used as a noun modifier.

Verb (Dictionary form) + ため(に)

This formation expresses a purpose or an objective. It indicates that the subject is performing an action in order to achieve the state or action described by the verb.

The dictionary form of a verb followed by ため indicates the purpose of the subsequent action.

I exercise in order to lose weight.

I bought a camera to take photos.

Note

The verb preceding ため must be in the dictionary form (non-past) to express purpose. If the verb is in the past tense, it usually indicates a reason or cause (because of) rather than a purpose.
