Grammar Point

あとで

later (on), afterwards

Verb (Past Informal) + あとで

This structure is used to indicate that an action or state occurs after another action or event has finished. It focuses on the sequence of events.

Verb た form + あとで

Attach あとで to the past informal form of a verb to show that the second action happens after the first one is completed.

I will go to the library after I eat.

I watched a movie after I finished my homework.

Note

When using a verb, it must always be in the past informal (た form) even if the overall sentence describes a future event. This is because the first action must be 'completed' before the second action starts.

Noun + の + あとで

This structure is used with nouns that represent an action or an event to show that something happens after that event.

Place the particle の between a noun and あとで to indicate a sequence following that noun.

I will drink coffee after the meal.

I met my friend after work.

Note

This can only be used with nouns that imply an action or a period of time, such as 'work', 'meal', or 'class'.
