Grammar Point

もらう

to receive, to take, to accept

Receiver は Giver に/から Object を もらう

This grammar point is used when the speaker or someone the speaker empathizes with receives an object from someone. The giver is usually of equal or lower social status than the receiver.

The receiver is the subject of the sentence (marked by は or が), the giver is marked by に or から, and the object received is marked by を.

I received a book from my friend.

My younger brother got a watch from our father.

Note

The particle 'に' or 'から' is used to mark the giver. 'から' is more common when receiving something from an organization or institution. 'もらう' cannot be used when the giver is of higher status than the receiver; in those cases, 'いただく' is used instead.
